Relearning how to taste
WINEMAKER:
Dr. Andrew Hedley is from England and has a PhD in Organic Chemistry. In 1998 he decided to leave his career and move to New Zealand to learn about wine-making. He joined Framingham in 2001. He is a self-taught winemaker. His reputation with Framingham is renowned and his wines are considered the best in New Zealand. Andrew’s a staunch lover of Punk music. Framingham hosts punk music festivals – Andrew looking like a buzz cut John Lennon with a patch on his neck and electronic voice box.
In 2006 he discovered he had a tumor in his larynx and had to have it removed. He now speaks with an electronic voice box. Removing the larynx causes huge changes in how to taste and smell. (70% of tatste is Air flow is now completely done through the hole in the neck. He had to come up with a new way of smelling and tasting the wines he created.
He still continued to be the winemaker and create award winning wines. Won more awards since & brought international acclaim to Framingham. He is considered one of the most skilled practitioners anywhere in the world.
